Conran Timeline
Terence founded the Conran Design Group in 1956 with the aim to design contemporary furniture and interiors for a new generation, developing the singular Conran vision, philosophy and aesthetic.
In 1962, Terence opened an innovative flat-pack furniture manufacturer, the first of it's kind in the UK, known then as ‘knock down’, which produced easy-assemble Conran ‘Summa’ furniture, making ‘plain, simple, useful’ design accessible to all.
1956 - Plain, Simple, Useful

1962 - Leader of the flat pack
The first of its kind in the UK, Terence opens an innovative flat-pack furniture manufacturer, known then as ‘knock down’, which produces easy-assemble Conran ‘Summa’ furniture, making ‘plain, simple, useful’ design accessible to all.
1964 - Have you heard of Habitat?
Terence launches Habitat on Fulham Road, Chelsea, introducing young Londoners to a revolutionary European approach to shopping, cooking and living, with shelves stacked with French cookware and casual home accessories.
1974 - The Home Tome
Sir Terence publishes the first edition of The House Book, a pioneering guide to curating the home that establishes him as the voice of innovative design and considered living in the UK.
1983 - Knight of the Design Realm
Our founder receives a knighthood, the highest honour from Buckingham Palace, for his unparalleled services to design and retail in the UK, officially changing his title to Sir Terence Conran.
2001 - Up in the clouds
Briefed by British Airways to ‘make the best plane in the world even better’, Sir Terence redesigns the interior of the sound barrier-breaking airborne icon, Concorde, renewing the aircraft with postmodern inspired aesthetics.
