The story of the Mah Jong sofa

Roche Bobois’ most recognised and iconic design.

The Mah Jong is sophistication and elegance. This creation features some of the designer's emblematic motifs, such as the stripe, here embellished with a woven flower, or the torn fishnet in a superposition of light and dark tones. The Mah Jong sofa rests on new platforms, making it even more comfortable.

The freedom of form that this fully modular low seating system allows broke the design mould and encouraged a completely new way of organising living spaces. Upholstered in simple plain fabrics at the beginning, today it is ‘dressed’ by some of the world’s finest couturiers.

Hans Hopfer

Painter, sculptor and designer Hans Hopfer has been designing sofas since the 1970s, with some of them becoming iconic pieces in the Roche Bobois collections. Sensitive to changing lifestyles and creative space management, he designed seats with fully modular, floor-level units.

In 1971, Hopfer created the Mah Jong sofa: a system of cushions that champion complete freedom of form and function. Avant-garde at the time of its creation, it is an iconic piece today. Upholstered in fabrics designed by Kenzo Takada, Missoni and Jean-Paul Gaultier, the Mah Jong has long set the standard for creative modularity.

“The most Parisian of Japanese designers”

Kenzo Takada has designed exceptional fabric collections to upholster the Mah Jong. His creations reflect the graphic and cultural hallmarks of his style: East meets West, colour mastery, and subtle patterns for ever more original and elegant harmonies.
